The Newport String Project takes you on a short tour of the rich textures and colors of 20th and 21st century music.
In the hands of the dynamic Newport String Project players and guest percussionist Piero Guimareas you’ll experience a driving piece written for string quartet and marimba, by Cuban composer Igmar Alderete. The performance rests on cello and marimba in a hauntingly beautiful (soulful) piece written by Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov. Then it’s on to the high-spirited energy, the complex rhythms and smoldering sensuality of the Argentinian tangos of Astor Piazzolla.
The second half of the concert takes listeners to post-Stalinist Russia with Shostakovich’ mercurial Quartet #6. You’ll hear the complex range of emotions that reflect the composer’s personal tragedies and triumphs. And you’ll be invited to experience the unique combination of sweet innocence and musical complexity that characterize this quartet.
